Pot type strainer DN100 in stainless steel with quick-opening closure on the cover, differential pressure gauge, and vent and drain via ball valves

Pot strainer

Pot Type Strainer

The compact strainer for small nominal sizes – made entirely of stainless steel, installed hanging below the line and with a closure that opens without tools. Nine nominal sizes from DN15 to DN100 form a continuous range.

Unlike the large designs, the pot type strainer is not engineered individually but is a standard unit. What changes is the nominal size – everything else is fixed. As the manufacturer, we build every pot type strainer in this range in our own workshop.

Operating principle

A screen below the line

The medium enters from the side, flows through the strainer basket and leaves the housing on the other side. The basket hangs downwards – so the dirt collects where it comes out by itself when the strainer is opened.

This installation position is the standard and the reason for the name. Upright installation is also possible if the line requires it; a drain connection is then needed.

  • Standard installation position suspended, upright on request
  • Vent socket in the cover, drain socket in the bottom of the housing
  • Face-to-face length to EN 558-1, series 1
  • Designed to the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU

Installation position

Upright or suspended – where the basket is changed

The pot type strainer is available in two versions that differ in one point: on which side the clamp closure sits. This determines in which direction the strainer basket is removed – and where you need to leave clearance during installation.

Suspended

Technical drawing of the pot type strainer in suspended installation position

The standard

The closure is at the bottom, inlet and outlet are above it. The medium is led downwards into the basket, flows from the inside to the outside and leaves the housing again at the top.

For cleaning, the closure at the bottom is opened and the basket is removed downwards. The clearance must therefore be below the strainer – nothing is needed above the line. This makes this version attractive where something else already runs close above the line.

Upright

Technical drawing of the pot type strainer in upright installation position

When there is no space below

Here the closure is at the top and the connections are below it. The medium is led upwards into the basket; the flow path through the screen remains the same.

It is opened from the top, and the basket comes out upwards. The clearance above the strainer is needed – in return, everything below remains free. This version is the choice when the strainer sits close above the floor or above a drip tray.

What you should tell us

The installation position belongs in the enquiry

The version has to be specified when ordering, because it affects more than the closure. Vent and drain are also in a different position depending on the version. The connections must match the flow direction.

  • suspended as standard – basket downwards, clearance below
  • upright on request – basket upwards, clearance above
  • vent and drain follow the version
  • both positions in all nominal sizes from DN15 to DN100

Tell us about the installation situation – ideally with a sketch or a photo of the location. When space is tight, it is often only this view that decides which version is possible at all.

Aseptic clamp connection as quick-opening closure on the pot type strainer

Quick-opening closure

Cleaning without a toolbox

The housing is not bolted but held together by an aseptic clamp connection to DIN 32676 – a profile clamp that can be opened by hand with a wing nut. No set of spanners, no bolt circle, no searching for the right tool.

That sounds like a detail, but in practice it decides how often cleaning actually takes place. Where a screen change takes a minute, it gets done; where it takes a quarter of an hour, it gets postponed.

  • Profile clamp with wing nut instead of a bolt circle
  • Strainer basket can be removed by hand
  • Housing and cover remain connected
  • Compact design, low weight

Series

Nine nominal sizes, one design

From DN15 to DN100 the range is built the same way throughout: the same closure principle, the same material, the same pressure rating. This makes selection simple and keeps the spare parts stock manageable – a strainer basket fits exactly one nominal size and every unit of that size.

DN15 to DN40

The small sizes for branch lines, sampling points and dosing lines. From DN15 with a ½-inch connection and face-to-face lengths from 130 mm – the strainer needs hardly more space than a fitting.

Pot type strainer DN25 in stainless steel, screen change from below

DN50 and DN65

The most frequently requested sizes. Face-to-face lengths of 230 and 290 mm to standard, so the unit fits in place of an existing component without modifying the line.

DN80 and DN100

The upper end of the range. Here the compact design reaches its limit – above that, the basket strainer with a bolted cover closure is the more sensible solution.

Strainer element

Support basket with fine mesh, standard 0.5 mm

As standard, the pot type strainer works with a support basket in 1.4301 with square perforation Qg 10-12. The fine mesh screen in 1.4401 has a mesh size of 0.5 mm. This is finer than in the large designs, because this strainer usually sits as the last stage upstream of a sensitive component.

The range is open in both directions: from 0.05 mm to coarse perforated plate with 10 mm. The right filtration grade depends on the component downstream, not on the medium – explained under Selecting the mesh size for the pot type strainer →.

Connection and options

What can be changed in the range

The design is fixed – connection, gasket and attachments depend on the installation point.

  • Flange to DIN EN 1092-1 Form B – the standard, in stainless steel 1.4571 like the housing
  • Butt-weld ends to DIN EN 12627 or to ANSI, where no detachable joint is wanted
  • Thread to BSPT and BSPP, often the more practical solution in the small nominal sizes
  • ANSI design with CL150 flange to ASME B16.5 or NPT socket to ASME B16.11
  • Clamp connection to DIN 11851 as end connection, where existing lines require it

In addition, the options also known from the large designs:

Pot type strainer DN25 in stainless steel with clamp connection as end connection
Two stainless steel pot type strainers as a twin unit with changeover

Variant

Two pots with changeover

Where operation must not be interrupted even in small nominal sizes, two units can be combined into one changeover unit. One pot filters while the other is cleaned – the same principle as the large duplex strainer, only in the format of this range.

A differential pressure gauge belongs with it: it shows when to switch over. Without it, the time for the change remains a guess.

Dimensions

Dimensions, screen area and weight

Dimensions of the standard design: L is the face-to-face length to EN 558-1 series 1, H the overall height, ∅D1 the housing diameter and ∅D3 the connecting pipe. The weight applies to the empty unit. A dimensioned drawing for your nominal size is included with the design proposal.

DN1004″350592219.1114.396,63019.028.0

Because the face-to-face lengths follow the standard, the pot type strainer can take the place of an existing component of the same nominal size without modifying the line. Note the overall height: the pot hangs downwards and needs clearance there so that the basket can be removed.

Applications

Where the pot type strainer is used

Wherever filtering takes place in small nominal sizes and frequent cleaning is needed. Typical installation points are the strainer in the heating system, the water line, and pumps, valves and measuring points. It is often the last stage upstream of a sensitive component.

A frequent case is its use as a pre-strainer. The pot type strainer catches what would otherwise clog a larger plant downstream. It is compact and quickly cleaned.

Manufacturing and documentation

Standard range from our own production

The standard range is also made in our own workshop: cutting, welding, pickling and passivating, testing. That is why a different face-to-face length, another connection or a special mesh size remains possible without turning the unit into a custom build.

We compile certificates and documentation to suit the applicable code – inspection certificate 3.1 to EN 10204, TÜV inspection, pressure test report and declaration of conformity to the PED. See Certificates and documentation for strainers →.

Frequently asked questions about the pot type strainer

Yes, this is one of its most frequent applications. It sits upstream of pumps, valves and heat exchangers and retains whatever is circulating in the system – rust, scale, gasket residues. The stainless steel design and the tool-free screen change are an advantage there, because cleaning is done regularly.

In size and closure. The pot type strainer covers DN15 to DN100, is opened by hand and is a standard unit. The basket strainer starts at DN50, goes up to DN1000 and is designed for each application. Above DN100 it is the more sensible choice.

Suspended is the standard, because the dirt then collects in the pot and falls out when it is opened. Upright installation is possible if the line requires it – a drain connection should then be added, otherwise medium runs back into the line when the strainer is opened.

0.5 mm. The range goes from 0.05 mm to coarse perforated plate with 10 mm. Because this strainer is often the last stage upstream of a sensitive component, it is more often made in a fine version than the large designs. A filter bag can also be fitted if finer filtration is needed.

The previous series with a profile clamp closure is no longer built new. We continue to supply replacement screens and baskets for it – tell us the nominal size and the mesh size, and we will make them to match.

Yes. The quickest way is with the dimensions of the old part: outside diameter, height, edge design and the mesh size. A photo also helps.
