Strainer gasket
Strainer Gasket
The strainer gasket is a flange gasket with inserted wire mesh. It replaces the existing gasket and filters at the same time – a gasket with mesh. As a result, the line does not get a single millimetre longer.
That makes it the first choice when there is no installation space: no spacer, no change to the face-to-face length, no new bolts. The price for this is the small screen area.
Application
What it is suitable for – and what not
The strainer gasket is a tool for one particular moment: commissioning. After that it is usually removed again.
Start-up phase after construction
Weld spatter, scale and chips from the new line. The gasket retains them until the line has been flushed clean – then it is exchanged for a normal gasket the next time the joint is opened.
No room for more
Where the face-to-face length is fixed because pump and valve are positioned to the millimetre, neither a flat plate strainer nor, even less, a witch hat strainer will fit. The gasket always fits.
Only for short-term protection
The screen area corresponds to the pipe cross-section. With a lot of dirt it clogs quickly – for continuous operation, a strainer with a housing is the right answer.
Pressure test and flushing
It is also used during leak tests. It catches whatever comes loose during flushing – before it gets into pumps or instrumentation.
Construction
Gasket and screen in one part
The gasket ring provides the sealing between the flanges, the inserted wire mesh in stainless steel 1.4401 provides the filtration. Both are firmly joined – there is no loose part that can slip during installation.
Gasket materials
- AFM 34 – the standard for water, oils and many chemicals
- Klingersil – fibre-reinforced, broad range of media
- GSB graphite with tanged steel insert – for high temperatures and steam
- Klinger-Quantum – where particularly tight joints are required
The thickness results from the gasket material and the wire mesh – it is therefore not a fixed value but follows the combination. The dimensions follow DIN 2690.
Dimensions
Dimensions DN10 to DN250
∅ A is the free passage, ∅ B the outside diameter of the ring. All dimensions in millimetres.
| DN | PN10 ∅A/B | PN16 ∅A/B |
|---|---|---|
| DN10 | 18 / 45 | 18 / 45 |
| DN15 | 22 / 50 | 22 / 50 |
| DN20 | 28 / 60 | 28 / 60 |
| DN25 | 35 / 70 | 35 / 70 |
| DN32 | 43 / 82 | 43 / 82 |
| DN40 | 49 / 92 | 49 / 92 |
| DN50 | 61 / 107 | 61 / 107 |
| DN65 | 77 / 127 | 77 / 127 |
| DN80 | 90 / 142 | 90 / 142 |
| DN100 | 115 / 162 | 115 / 162 |
| DN125 | 141 / 192 | 141 / 192 |
| DN150 | 169 / 218 | 169 / 218 |
| DN200 | 220 / 273 | 220 / 273 |
| DN250 | 274 / 328 | 274 / 330 |
The thickness is not shown in the table because it depends on the gasket material and the mesh. Higher pressure ratings, larger nominal sizes and other standards are available on request – as are customer-specific designs and mesh sizes.

Frequently asked questions
Questions we are often asked
Usually only for the start-up phase – a few operating hours to a few days. It can stay permanently, but because of the small area it holds considerably less dirt than a flat plate strainer or witch hat strainer.
The strainer gasket needs no additional installation space, the flat plate strainer a few millimetres. In return, the flat plate strainer has more area and a sturdy ring. If the face-to-face length is fixed, that settles the question.
The mesh is inserted to your specification. A coarse to medium mesh is usual for the start-up phase; fine meshes clog very quickly given the small area.
Like any flange gasket, the strainer gasket is a wearing part – once the joint has been opened, it should be replaced. Plan it as a consumable, not as a component.
