Cartridge filter housing in simplex strainer design with inserted filter candle used as a filter cartridge

Cartridge filter housing

Cartridge filter housing for high flow rates

Filter cartridges are long, slender elements that are suspended vertically in a housing. Because many of them fit side by side, a large filter area is achieved on a small cross-section – that is the reason for choosing this design.

In terms of the housing, the cartridge filter is a simplex strainer: the same upright cylinder, the same cover, the same production. What changes is the element and its suspension.

Operating principle

Many narrow areas instead of one large one

The decisive value in filtration is not the filtration grade alone, but the area. The more area is available, the more slowly the medium flows through, the lower the pressure loss and the longer the element lasts.

A strainer basket offers the area of its shell. Cartridges offer the sum of their individual areas – many times as much for the same housing diameter. That is why this design is chosen when fine separation is needed and a high flow still has to pass through.

  • Large filter area with a small housing cross-section
  • Low pressure loss with fine separation
  • Cartridges can be removed individually
  • Housing as an upright cylinder, as with the simplex strainer

What we supply

The housing to your specification – the cartridges to go with it

We do not design the cartridge filter for you; we build it to your specifications. Once cartridge length, connection type and number are fixed, we make the housing to suit. It is welded, in carbon steel or stainless steel, with cover, suspension, vent and the connections the installation point requires. On request we also procure filter cartridges in stainless steel, polypropylene or another material.

The cartridges themselves are consumables. On request we procure them to your specification, so that the housing and the element match from the start.

  • Welded housing, carbon steel or stainless steel
  • Suspension to suit cartridge length and connection type
  • Connections on the housing – flange, butt-weld end or thread
  • Differential pressure gauge – shows when the cartridges are clogged
  • Cartridges procured to your specification on request
The manufacturing route is the same as for the simplex strainer → – an upright cylinder with a cover, only with different internals.

Frequently asked questions about the cartridge filter housing

The area. Both separate finely, but a bag offers only its own shell area, while several cartridges side by side provide many times as much. For a low flow rate the bag is the simpler solution; as soon as a high flow has to pass through, it does not last long enough.

Both are possible. We make the housing – to your specification for cartridge length, connection type and number. The cartridges are consumables and are procured to your specification on request.

That depends on the internal dimensions and the cover opening. Tell us both, as well as the cartridges you want to use – we will then check whether the suspension fits into the existing housing.
